2018 Private Buoys

Published on 8/10/2018
This summer several property owners have placed private buoys in front of their property in Hinton bay and other locations on Round Lake.  The RLPOA safety chair was contacted by a member who requested more information about the installation of private buoys.

While investigating this question, Mark Little, Wisconsin DNR Recreation Warden, stated that all buoys must be approved by Wisconsin DNR, or delegated agency, and any unauthorized buoy placed in a body of water is in violation of WI. Statute 30.15 (1) (a).  Any  property owner who has installed a buoy that is not in compliance with the statute is subject to a fine of up to $767.50 that can be enforced every 24 hours until the buoy is removed.

The board urges all property owners that have installed private buoys illegally to remove them as soon as possible.  If you have any questions regarding the placement of these buoys please view “Placing Waterway Markers in Wisconsin Waters” on the Wisconsin DNR website and/or contact Craig DePew, the Sawyer County Recreation Officer.
